A religious leader who claimed God punishes gay people with natural disasters has seen his own home destroyed by floods .

Tony Perkins - the leader of Family Research Council - might be regretting that statement after becoming another victim of the Louisiana flood crisis.

The disaster has seen several people killed and thousands left homeless.

But people are viewing the destruction of his property as a glimmer of good news after what he has previously stated as fact.

The group leader had to flee his flooded home in a canoe and now faces six months living in a camper van to mull over those words.

Conservative evangelicals have often claimed floods - like those after Hurricane Katrina - are God’s punishment for ‘sins' like abortion or same-sex marriage.

In a 2015 interview with Messianic Jewish pastor Jonathan Cahn, Perkins said he agreed that Hurricane Joaquin which hit Hawaii last year was “a sign of God’s wrath.

He has said he believes “the homosexual community” is engaged in behaviour “that will destroy our nation”.
