A teenager’s bedroom burned to a crisp after she left her phone charging on her bed overnight.
15-year-old Caitlin Rae Durant, from Morfa Bychan in north Wales, fled the blaze and fortunately escaped – but all of her properties were destroyed, and her family forced to leave the house for six months.
Her iPhone charger had caught fire despite being a genuine Apple product. This is because she left it on, the bed, resting it on the bed covers. The phone overheated, and the entire room was swallowed up in flames.
Firefighters have now released photos of her room as a stark warning.
‘Turn chargers off and unplug them before you go to bed,’ Stuart Millington, senior fire safety manager at North Wales Police, said. ‘Never leave items on charge or unattended for long periods.’
Caitlin’s mum Gemma said everything in their home had been ‘destroyed due to heat, smoke and water damage’.
‘Nothing can be saved,’ she added. ‘Downstairs has been flooded due to the volume of water that had to be pumped in to extinguish the fire, everything has suffered smoke damage.
‘At the moment we’re watiing to see if the experts think some items downstairs can be saved if professionally cleaned and restored.’
